About the Project
Gas deliveries to the South Stream gas pipeline in planned volumes require expansion of the gas transmission system in the Russian territory: this project was entitled the Southern Corridor. It requires construction of additional 2,506.2 km of the linear pipeline section and 10 compressor stations with total capacity of 1,516 MWt.
The Southern Corridor system of gas pipelines will provide for transportation of additional volumes of gas to the central and southern regions of Russia to enhance development of industries and utilities, ramp up gas infrastructure development, and ensure uninterrupted delivery of gas to the South Stream gas trunkline.

Construction of 10 compressor stations (CS) with total capacity of 1,516 MWt is planned within the framework of project implementation. The project spans the territories of 8 Russian Federation constituents: Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Saratov, Volgograd, Voronezh and Rostov regions, the Republic of Mordovia, and Krasnodar Territory.
One of the most challenging sections of the gas pipeline is the crossing via the Kuban River. It is unique in terms of its length - 1,507 m. Microtunneling was selected as a method of project implementation. This is the most energy-efficient way of overcoming water obstacles that does not cause damage to the environment, which is very significant for the Kuban River that supplies water to three basins and rice paddies (territories of rice fields in Krasnodar Territory). More than 106 unique fish species dwell in the river basin.
The mechanical tunneling system Herrenknecht was used in the construction of the crossing. The mechanical tunneling system Herrenknecht was also used in the construction of the Lefortovo tunnel and the Serebryany Bor tunnel in Moscow.
Moreover, laying of the Southern Corridor gas pipelines is carried out in the former regions of World War II battles. Specialists of Gazprom Group companies carry out search activities that help establish and immortalize the names of unknown soldiers.
Before commencement of the construction, the area is cleared of all explosive objects. More than 150 bombshells, mines and grenades were found and defused during such activities.
Project implementation is divided into two phases.
Phase I. The Western Route.
The first phase stipulates construction of a gas transmission system leading from the Pisarevka CS (Voronezh Region) to the Russkaya CS (Krasnodar Territory). The Russkaya CS, which is to become the main compressor station of the offshore section of the South Stream gas pipeline, will be built in Anapa District of Krasnodar Territory and will become the most powerful compressor station in the world.
The Russkaya CS will also serve as the end point of the Southern Corridor and the starting point of South Stream. The designed capacity of 448 MWt will ensure the gas pressure of up to 28.45 MPa. This will make it possible to carry blue fuel over a distance of 900 km without employing additional technical facilities.
The first phase provides for the construction of an interconnector between the Kubanskaya CS and the Korenovskaya CS. Additionally, the existing Petrovsk-Pisarevka corridor will be revamped.
The length of the Western Route gas pipelines, including the interconnector between the Kubanskaya CS and the Korenovskaya CS will total 880.6 km, the capacity of compressor stations will amount to 574 MWt.
Phase II. The Eastern Route.
The second phase includes construction of the gas transmission system leading from the Pochinki CS (Nizhny Novgorod Region) to the Russkaya CS in the existing corridor Pochinki – Izobilnoye – Severo-Stavropolskoye UGS. The Eastern Route gas pipelines will span 1,625.6 km, the total capacity of compressor stations will amount to 942 MWt.
The project was launched in 2010; its completion is planned for 2017.
